ENCOUNTER

UFO's. What can I really say about them? Are they real? Why don't I leave the answer up to you? Let me list some of the strange events I've had in my life and you decide for yourself. It is hard to know where to start because of so many unexplained events.

MISSING TIME (2)

While living in the country, my brother and I would often hear stories of UFO sightings in the area near us and so on lazy nights when we were both bored we would go searching for them. We were not successful - we were often in the wrong spot while they were sighted somewhere else. My brother often claimed to know when they were around and he did seem to know because every time he said so, there was a report the next day of sightings and the local paper often printed stories on their sightings in the area. My brother often claimed that when he knew they were coming, he could lay on the house roof at night and see them in the sky. I thought this was really neat and told him the next time I was around, and he had the feeling, we would go look for them and maybe we might finally see one. Be careful what you wish...

One June night in 1974 I was at my mom's house to pick up garbage to go to the dump [my sons were already bathed and ready for bed] and watching for bears at the dump was our entertainment. While at my parents, my brother said 'the visitors' were around so we decided he would join me to go to the dump and then look for UFO's.

My mother told us we had to be back by 10 p.m. because my brother had school the next day. When I asked her why so early [he was nearly 18] she got really annoyed and said he was too hard to wake up in the morning. He had to be home by 10 p.m. or he wasn't going. My brother and I were a little annoyed with the curfew but said we would be home by ten. We decided we wouldn't stay at the dump [unless we saw bears when we got there] and just UFO hunt instead.

Now, you have to understand, my brother can be very particular about some things and because my mom had raised a fuss he made a big point out of going to the kitchen and setting his watch at the exact same time as the clock there. He told me to set mine too but I declined - my watch was five minutes slow and I could easily compensate for the time difference. We loaded the trunk with garbage, put my two young children in the back seat of the car and off we went to the dump - it was just a little after 6:30 p.m.

When we got to the dump we found several vehicles [more people looking for entertainment and hoping to see bears] but no bears. We stuck around for a short while and spoke to some of our neighbours before deciding to go off on our own to look for 'flying stuff'. It was now after 7 p.m.

Each time we went looking for UFO's we would find a new location to sit at - partly in hopes that change would bring us a view and partly because the same spots became boring if we sat at them too often. We chose a different spot very close to home reasoning it would give us more time sitting [rather than driving around looking for a more out-of-the-way spot] so we could relax and watch. This was also our time of talking, planning and general gab session.

We would often sit there in the dark with the radio playing softly, talking in whispers while the kids would play with their toys in the back seat until they fell asleep. I would bring snacks and juice and fill the space up on the floor with pillows and other soft objects so they'd have plenty of room to play and sleep - this was after all our entertainment. We compared this to going to the drive in - we could sit and watch the wide screen view before us and take in all the sounds while discussing lots of things in the dark. This was affordable and handy [the closest drive in was actually over an hours drive away].

We found a spot on top of a flat knoll in a field surrounded by long grasses - a growth of trees spanned the horizon in all directions except for the way we came in. I shut the car off and turned on the radio [on low volume] as was our custom. Much to our surprise my 'never- fail-radio' was all static. There were no hydro lines near by and my radio had worked fine earlier in the day. We tried every possible channel but the radio just wouldn't work on any channel. In disgust we finally gave up and decided to just sit in the dark and watch. As we sat there we noticed massive balls of light that seem to explode behind the thick forest of trees in front of us. We thought we now knew the reason for the static - there was a storm in the area - but it was rather strange in that it seemed to be very localized and not really moving. We rolled the windows down but could hear no thunder and we both thought it must be very far off and that was why it looked like round balls of light flashing behind the many trees in front of us. We rolled our windows back up to keep out the bugs and continued to sit and talk quietly in the dark.

After perhaps a half-hour had passed, my two sons began to fight in the back seat [the soft music would usually put them to sleep and it was now past their bedtime]. They seemed to be getting crankier by the minute with no sign of settling down. At this time, my brother and I suddenly began to get uneasy with our surroundings and decided we would leave as we were not having a good time and too many things seemed to be going wrong - this was not how we spent our 'happy' time. We were disappointed as our relaxing evening began to become very annoying.

We decided to call it quits and head for home [and try again another day]. I was trying to make my boys settle down in the back so we could leave, I switched on the overhead interior light so I could better see what was going on but my light wasn't working and before I could give it any further thought my brother suddenly called out, "Look!" Because of the sharpness of his tone and the urgency in his voice I quickly turned to see what he was indicating. As both [or possibly all four of us] watched we saw several grey figures clearing the top of the knoll and coming across the field towards us in the dark. As they got nearer we could see maybe five 'people' approaching, odd they were strung out, short, tall, short, tall. My brother suddenly panicked and began to yell to get out of here quick, the kids started to cry and scream and I lunged forward over the steering wheel and made a mad grab for my ignition switch [with my keys in it] and my right hand began to turn the ignition on ...

____________

I suddenly snapped 'alert' [I cannot describe it as awake because I was not asleep]. I was totally aware on all levels and wondered why I was slumped over on my left side against the drivers door window? I didn't remember falling asleep. As I looked over at my brother I saw he had his head thrown back over the seat headrest with his mouth wide open and his eyes closed - his face pointing to the roof of the car. As I mentally thought his name he suddenly snapped 'alert' and looked at me, then as if of one mind, we both turned to look in the back seat at my two sons.

Both of my sons were lying there as if asleep - spread on the seat and cushions. My eldest son suddenly snapped 'alert' as we looked at him, sitting up and turning to look at both of us. Then, as if of one mind [and still not saying a word], the three of us turned to look at my youngest son. He didn't respond. We continued to stare at him and mentally I called his name but there was no reaction. Finally I spoke out loud and called his name - he still didn't respond. My brother became concerned and also began to call his name, then my other son joined in. I couldn't reach him from the front seat so I asked me other son to gently nudge him as we called to him. My youngest son came to as of out of a very deep sleep - he was not alert but very groggy. It was at this point that my brother said, 'that was weird' and I agreed. We began to discuss what had happened up until this point as we were very puzzled and during the discussion of facts leading up to this we both suddenly remembered 'the visitors' and then I had a flash back and remembered the panic and reaching for the ignition switch... and then suddenly everything was blank. My last conscious thought was turning on the car ignition - my next is 'waking' up slumped against the car door. How the heck did I get from A to Z?

We both became very excited as we remembered the events of a few moments ago but could not explain any of it. It just didn't make any sense to either one of us. I deduced that my youngest son had actually fallen asleep after the incident but still we could not explain the weird circumstances we found ourselves in. Not wanting to alarm my children I ended the discussion and decided to call it a night [I told my brother we would talk later and he agreed].

I turned my car around in the field and headed for the road. Just before I got to it my brother yelled again "Look!" I followed the direction of his pointing arm and there in the sky almost directly overhead we saw a speeding, blinking red light that sped swiftly across the sky way above us and then suddenly veered at right angles and went off is a whole new direction that was not physically possible - then it just disappeared. We now began to discuss what it might have been and ruled out all normal methods of transportation known to us. Because of its speed and the sharp right angled turn at the high speed we knew it was not anything man made. Helicopters couldn't travel that fast, that high up or maneuver that sharply. There had been no reduction in speed before the right-angled turn. Wondering what time it might be I automatically turned on the radio before remembering that it wasn't working. Much to my surprise it was working again and without the earlier static. My brother decided to try the overhead light to see if it worked now and it did. He glanced at his watch and it said 8:15 p.m. Well, this should make mom happy we joked, he was going to be home long before ten and we were only five minutes away. We drove home in high spirits after the sighting - we were both pleased and surprised to have our evening end like this so that it was not a total loss [we had already shrugged off the earlier 'stuff'].

We pulled into my parents' yard in a happy state and entered the house. I figured I would say good night and then take my boys home to bed. We were shocked as our mother greeted us with yelling and 'motherly type insults' as she demanded to know why we coming in so late especially after her telling us to come home early. My brother and I began to ask her what was going on as he was home early. My mother was furious as she berated us for our attitude and continued to tell us off. My brother pointed to his watch and said, 'look mom - it's early'. At this my mother became more enraged and asked him what he was trying to pull that it was not 8:20 but twenty minutes to eleven. We both thought she had 'flipped her tree' and my brother went up to the kitchen clock that he had set his watch by and told our mother to look at it. My mom replied for him to look at it and it said 10:40 p.m.

Now I was getting miffed - bad enough she yells at us for coming in early [not late] but did she actually think we would believe it just because she changed the time? Was something wrong with her? Why was she doing this? I went off into the living room to check the clock there. It said 10:43 p.m. Bull, I thought and headed down the hall into my parents bedroom to look at their clock [my dad would have a fit if she touched it] - it said 10:41 p.m. Now, all the clocks in the house were within a couple of minutes of each other [perfectly normal] yet my brothers and my watch was two hours and twenty minutes earlier than them and we were still five minutes apart in time - his watch now read 8:27 p.m. and mine was 8:22 p.m. This didn't make any sense.

'Light suddenly dawned' and at this point my brother and I began to tell my mom of our strange occurrence in the car and about seeing the UFO fly overhead after. At first my mom thought it was more lies but then she realized we were both telling the truth. Neither my brother nor I were ever any good at lying. The more we told her the more upset she became, not with us but at the strange incidents [only later in life did I hear a bit about my mother's own strange happenings]. Finally she just said it was enough and that we all just needed to go to bed and get some sleep or it would be morning before we knew it. She said we would discuss it later - we never really did.

The next day we heard about sightings in the area again but the stories we heard were about somewhere else in the area. We didn't tell anyone about our strange time but we did mention the overhead zigzag light that took off at a fast speed and then disappeared.

Even knowing this to have happened we did not give it much thought. With so many ongoing and strange events in our lives we knew there was no point dwelling on it - we knew from past experience there were too many unexplained happenings that had no rational explanation [yet]. So we both filed it away in the backs of our minds and didn't really concern ourselves though we always remembered it.

We never went looking for UFO's again. [That was a little too much excitement for us.]

Can I explain what happened that night? Only with what I have told you. I have no rational explanation for the events or the missing time.

Have I ever tried to find out what happened - only once with regressive hypno-therapy with a certified M.D. I didn't really want to know [on a subconscious level I already knew and didn't want it confirmed]. The doctor confirmed that something traumatic had indeed occurred during the missing time. I had the session taped - the experience was quite traumatic and to this day I still cannot listen to the tape nor do I ever wish to.

Neither my brother nor I smoked cigarettes [or anything else]. We didn't do drugs or drink alcohol. You figure it out…
